Wilmington USTA League Tennis League FAQ

Some commonly heard questions and some I just made up:

How much does it cost to play in the league?

League dues are $28 for 2003. In addition, there is a $10 fee to Tennis Link.  This covers court use fees we pay to the city, a tee-shirt, the league party at the end of the season and administrative expenses the league incurs such as phone bills, stamps, travel expenses for mandatory statewide meetings, etc.  The Tennis Link fee covers our state and national dues and the cost of administering the scoring keeping system.

You must also be a member of the USTA. The USTA annual individual membership fee is $25. The USTA web site discusses the benefits of USTA membership. You can also download a membership form directly.

You will probably be asked to supply a few cans of tennis balls over the course of the season and you are responsible for your own equipment. The home team for each match must provide the balls.

How do I get a rating and what is the Dynamic Rating System?

You start our in League by rating yourself!  Based on USTA guidelines, you determine what you think your rating is using a guide to the skill levels. As you play during the year, our Dynamic Rating system will keep track of your performance.  If you are playing at a much too low a level, the rating system will move you up during the season.  At the end of the season, you will get a new rating, moving either up or down based on your performance during the year and the quality of your opponents.

What if I don't like my rating?

You give yourself your initial rating.  If you think you made a mistake and rated yourself to high, you will have to play the year out and see if the rating system agrees that you should move down.  If you think you should be playing higher than your ranking, you can join a team at the higher level.  A lot of people get concerned when the ratings come out in November and they have been moved up.  I know many people who thought they couldn't handle the higher level, only to find they did fine. That doesn't mean they won all of their matches, only that they were competitive.  If you are injured and think you should play at a lower level, you must contact the league coordinator who can help you file the necessary paperwork.

I have a rating, but I didn't play last year. Can I self rank?

Once you have a computer generated ranking, it is good for five years.  The league coordinator can provide you with details.

I have a rating, but I just moved into town. Is it still valid?

Yes. Call the league number (910) 452-2941 just to be sure.

OK, I want to try this out! How do I get started?

Keep an eye on this web page.  I will post information you need to learn about the league and all the other programs offered by the GWTA.  You can also call the league number (452-2941) to get information about joining a team.

I think my opponent cheated during my match! What can I do?

First, all problems must be decided between the players on the court with no outside help. Basically, this means you need to know the rules. I am constantly amazed by the number of experienced players who are ignorant of some of the basic rules of tennis. You can learn the rules and the code by following the above links or by purchasing "A Friend at the Court", a small book with the rules and the code which is a nice reference to have in your tennis bag when a question arises. Remember, rules questions must be decided on the court! If you have a question that cannot be decided on the court, you can file a grievance after the match and a committee of players will hear your complaint and rule on it. You must file the grievance IMMEDIATELY.
