Fall 2010 QuickStart Information

The GWTA will be sponsoring a QuickStart tennis program over six weekends from September 18 to October 23. There will be an Introductory program for children ages 6-10 and an Instructional program for children 11-14. UNCW Men Finish Season

The UNCW Men's Tennis Team finished up their season with a third place finish in the CAA tournament. The 15-6 Seahawks reached several milestones this season including the highest ever team ranking (48), a record six players named to all-conference teams and two doubles teams ranked in the top 50 nationally. With all their players returning next year, UNCW is looking forward to building on their accomplishments in 2011.

GWTA Hosts QuickStart Tennis Carnival

GWTA conducted the first QuickStart tennis carnival for kids ages 6-a4 on Saturday, March 6 at Porters Neck Country Club and at Echo Farms Country Club.

87 kids participated at Porters Neck and 75 at Echo Farms. This was the biggest carnival ever in Wilmington and all the kids had a first look at the new Quick Start Format. This format was used in Europe for the last 20 years but it is new for the USA.

Kids under 8 play on a smaller court (we divide one tennis court to 4 smaller court) and use a foam (Nerf) balls. Kids under 10, play on a court where is lines are about 15 feet smaller than regular court and they use pressurized balls. This helps the kids learn the game much faster and with more control.

A special thank you to Rod Badakhsh and the Echo Farms gang and to Kendrick Bunn, Allen Farfour and all the volunteers at Porters Neck.

Many of our USTA sanctioned leagues require USTA membership to participate. You can join the USTA via their web site. You can also renew your USTA membership over the phone with FAX confirmation by calling 1-800-990-USTA. Don't wait till the last moment! All memberships must be current through the end of league play.

Empie Tennis Center Grand Opening Scheduled for September 11

On Saturday, September 11th, 2010 we are planning a grand opening celebration for the new tennis center. The celebration will include:

A Tennis Carnival for children, 10 am to 12 noon

A QuickStart Tennis Tournament for children, 8 am to 12 noon

A Junior Team Tennis Tournament, 8 am to 12 noon

A World Team Tennis Tournament, 8 am to 8 pm
