Wilmington First Annual Wheelchair Tournament PDF  | Print |  E-mail
On August 8 - 9, 2009, the Wilmington Wheelchair Tennis Club will be hosting a wheelchair tennis tournament for players with disabilities on the UNCW campus. This will be a first in the Wilmington area and we hope it will become an annual event. GWTA is the tournament's main sponsor and has been instrumental in helping get this tournament started. This is the only wheelchair tennis tournament in North Carolina and we are looking forward to welcoming players from all over the East Coast.

The tournament will consist of 3 divisions; A (top division), B (intermediate) and C (beginner). Wheelchair tennis is all-inclusive, allowing beginning players to participate in matches along with more experienced athletes.

Most players will sign up for both singles and doubles. Singles matches are traditional 3-set affairs, with each player guaranteed at least 2 matches (the tournament will have a consolation round). Doubles matches are single-elimination. The tournament starts on Saturday, August 8 at 9am, until around 8pm.

On Sunday, we will begin play at 9am and hopefully finish around 3pm. We would love to see GWTA members coming out and see what wheelchair tennis is all about, even if they can only stop by for a few minutes. We should have some of the top-ranked players in the A Division, making for competitive and entertaining matches
