The Wilmington Tennis League was founded in 1988 to allow local players to participate in the USTA's Team Tennis Program. As Wilmington has experienced rapid growth, so as the league. With over 1500 players on 120 teams, the Wilmington Tennis League is one of the state's largest. The league supports eleven different levels of play: Women's 2.5 - 4.5, Men's 3.0 – 5.0 and the only Men's 2.5 league in the state. It also runs a Senior League for players over 50. Close cooperation between the league and local area country clubs allows players to play on both hard and clay courts at a variety of venues around the city. From the rating clinics in December and January to the big league blow-out party after the season, the league strives to be an organization that brings people together and provides a fun outlet for its membership.
The league is also active in the community. We are proud that the league has consistently been able to donate excess funds to local area high schools and to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington to support their tennis programs. League members are active in tennis related activities outside the league, including a city wide tennis ladder during the off season. The league also provides a scholarship to an outstanding local high school tennis player.
The Wilmington Tennis League governing board consists of volunteers from the membership who devote extra time to handling the significant administrative tasks and personal issues that arise when over 1000 people try to do anything. Their efforts have made competitive tennis in Wilmington a reality.
